As licensed drivers, we have an obligation to follow the rules of the road and practice safe driving techniques. Unfortunately, many drivers continue to disregard the law and drive recklessly without any regard to safety, which can result in a car accident and injuries.
Whether it’s due to drunk driving or texting while driving, these negligent habits have become a normal occurrence on the road. It is imperative to know the basics of safe driving techniques and practice them every time you operate a vehicle.
The following are helpful tips for safe driving:
- Focus on the primary task of driving. Avoid multi-tasking by not using your phone or any other electronic device while driving. When in doubt slow down since speed provides less time to react to unexpected situations on the road.
- Drive “defensively.” Always “expect the unexpected” by staying aware of your surroundings. Assume other motorists will do something reckless or negligent, so you can always be ready to avoid it. Keep a two-second cushion between you and the car in front of you or a four-second cushion if you’re driving in inclement weather.
- Practice safety. Always wear your seatbelt and drive sober. Make sure all items are secured and do not try to retrieve items which fall on the floor.
- Plan ahead. Account room for extra time on your trips, long or short. Adjust your mirrors, seat, and climate controls before putting your car in drive.
